Udom, Civil Servants On War Path ...Over Unpaid Entitlements

The recent claim by the Akwa Ibom State Government that it has so far promoted over 20,000 civil servants in the State since the inception of the present administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel has attracted the wrath of Civil Servants and retired primary school teachers. The workers in the State employ have therefore spoiled for a showdown if their entitlements that follow promotion are not paid.

It would be recalled that the Head of Service, Mrs. Ekereobong Akpan, had during an interactive meeting with Senior Civil Servants from level 13 – 17 claimed that “over 20,000 workers have been promoted, 5,000 secondary school teachers and 3,000 primary school teachers employed.”
But while reacting to the claim, some workers in the State employ chided the administration, saying that it is a false claim to attract the attention of workers as the 2019 general election approaches.
One of the workers who gave his name simply as Edidiong told our correspondent at the State Secretariat that since the inception of the present administration his salary as a level 8 staff still remains despite being given promotion letter over two years ago.
The visibly angry Edidiong, described the promotion as a scam or deliberate attempt to withhold his entitlements.
Another staff who works with State Universal Basic Education, expressed worry over the claim by the State Government. He noted that despite the fact that he sat, passed the promotion interview and was promoted last year in which promotion papers have been given to him, the promotion is yet to reflect in his take home pay.
He also described the much publicized promotion as total deceit as according to him, there is nothing to show as commensuration to it. He disclosed that workers in the State will soon embark on a showdown with the government if their promotion entitlements which he said has run into millions of Naira are not paid.
He said, “Let the State Government pay us our promotion entitlements before the general election. It is our right and we also have the right to embark on strike to press home our demand.”
Meanwhile, retired primary school teachers who were retired between June 2015 and June 2016, are yet to get their one year pension arrears which the State Government has failed to pay despite claim in the media that it is not owing any retiree.
Some retirees, who spoke with The Sensor, described the claim as false as they are yet to be paid. They called on the Governor to do the needful in paying them even as according to them, some of their colleagues have died without collecting their pension and gratuities.
“Some of us that retired between June 2015 and June 2016 are yet to collect our one year pension as we were not paid when the present administration came into office. The same thing with our gratuity. We are yet to be paid our gratuity and many of our colleagues have died without enjoying the fruits of their labour. Some had no money to go to hospital, thus, died unexpectedly as a result of frustration.”
