The Year Biafra Died

By UbongAbasi Ise | Published On Monday 18 th September, 2017 in The Sensor Newspaper, p.3 “When a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw” ― Nelson Mandela The recent video released online which purportedly showed how military men unleashed reckless brutality on Biafra apologists in Abia State is not only bringing embarrassment to modern civilization but I can say that it perfectly demonstrates the barbaric state of nature in which life was said to be nasty and brutish, to put in the parlance of Thomas Hobbes, the British pessimistic thinker.    It felt so bad to see how the citizens were subjected to such nefarious mishandling. The absurdity aptly called on the review of our history and the need, as a nation, to retrace our steps to where things started to go wrong as the country is drifting towards this perplexing Biafra’s phenomenon. Indeed, Biafra – the Land of the Rising Sun, remains a story of people&

Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo made no historical mistake when he pertinently pointed out at Nazi Germany and Rwanda as the hotspots of hate speeches where war of words eventually gave vent to reckless brutality unprecedented in the history of mankind. Similarly, as a scholar of history, I would launch incursion into the past, beam spotlight, and bring up few historical instances in a way that would help this discourse in tackling the issue of hate speech facing Nigeria today. It would interest us to know that prior to the First World War, some Austrian writers maintained that squabble between na

AKISIEC Shifts LG Election

For those warming up to contest the forth-coming local government election in the State, they have to tary a while as Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission, AKISIEC has shifted the election date from November 11 to December 2, 2017. The Sensor authoritatively gathered that the shift as announced by AKISIEC Chairman, Mr. Aniedi Ikoiwak is to allow political parties fielding candidates to conclude their primaries and other logistics. It was further gathered that the shift shocked political parties and candidates who are said in high spirit to vy for various positions. It would be recalled that Ikoiwak and his team were drafted to AKISIEC in July to carryout the electoral process started by Dr. Gloria Ukpong. Shortly after swearing in the commission members, AKISIEC denied media report that the date for the November 11 poll would be shifted, thus, giving the aspirants to time to buckle the political belt for the election.
