5,000 Teachers The Most Courageous Akwa Ibomites – Lawyer
By UbongAbasi Ise
Counsel to the sacked 5,000 teachers says his clients are
undaunted in the face of legal storm as he describes them as the most
courageous set of Akwa Ibom people.
Barr. Clifford Thomas who is representing the 5,000
sacked teachers involving in the lawsuit with the Akwa Ibom State government,
told The Sensor on Monday that his
clients are not frustrated by the way the court case is dragging saying that
they remain unfazed in challenging the illegality of government.
“The 5000 litigants are not frustrated. They are the most courageous set of Akwa Ibom people who have chosen to challenge the illegality
of government action. And because they are challenging the illegality of government, does
not make them less Akwa Ibomites. In fact they are more of Akwa Ibom people
than those who chose to bear the pains of deprivation, the pain of injustice
pretending as if nothing has happened.
“I must commend
their ability to stare injustice in the face and say injustice, you cannot
work. I must commend their tenacity for the pursuit of justice I must also
commend their ability not to get compromised despite all the challenges they
are facing. And for advice, I want to encourage them to be steadfast; they should
hold the fort. They have begun a good fight, which is the good fight of faith; they
should fight it to the end. And in the end of the day, even the oppressive
government of this state would be grateful to them for helping set the template
for justice that would help the good people and government of Akwa Ibom State.
Illegality must be challenged and it must stop,
“We also use this opportunity to urge every Akwa Ibom
person who feels their rights have been trampled upon to rise up. There is a Dakkada
creed that says we should rise up. We should all rise up and oppose the
injustice. We should all rise up and oppose the attempt to trample on the
fundamental rights of the Akwa Ibom people, and we want to urge those who are
perpetuating this injustice to know that what goes around must come around.
What they do to other Akwa Ibom people today because they feel they are
vulnerable, would one day come to them and their children,” he said.
Meanwhile, the government of Akwa Ibom State was granted,
on Monday, 14 days extension by the Court of Appeal sitting in Calabar to file
for leave of court to enable it appeal against the ruling of the National
Industrial Court of 18th May, 2017.
