Humanitarian Crisis As Military Airstrikes Unsettle Essien Udim Indigenes

Bombardment of Ikot Akpan in Essien Udim local government area today has led to mass movement of persons from the community to nearby local government areas thus causing a swell in the population of some host villages.

An undisclosed source from Abiakpo clan in Obot Akara local government area who spoke with our correspondent lamented over large influx of internally displaced persons hitting his community for wants of refuge.

While regretting accomodation and food crises already compounding socio-economic condition of the area, the source said the insecurity in Essien Udim would take huge toll on agricultural production as indigenes have fled their community, abandoning their farms during this planting season.


Earlier today a combined military operation had carried out bombardment on Ikot Akpan community  following the recent spate of attacks on security operatives in the area by gunmen.

The Essien Udim community has been besieged for some days by persons suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB,


About four security operatives have allegedly been killed by gunmen, while military vehicles were reportedly set ablaze.


The military on Tuesday commenced bombardment of the suspected enemy hideouts in Ikot Akpan and environs with drones and helicopters flying at very low levels.



A report has it that the Army Public Relations Officer, 2 Brigade Nigerian Army, Akwa Ibom state, Captain Godfrey Abakpa, had confirmed the military operations in Essien Udim community..


When asked if the suspects were members of IPOB, he was quoted as saying that: ”They are miscreants for now. We can’t categorise them until they are apprehended and questioned to know their intention and who sent them”.

Meanwhile the number of casualties is yet to be ascertain as at the time of filing this report.

By UbongAbasi Ise Following the application by one of the representatives of the 5,000 sacked secondary school teachers, Mr. Ukeme Anwan, seeking a change of a sole witness in Suit CA/C/362/2018 brought before the Court of Appeal sitting in Calabar by the Akwa Ibom State Government, the state Attorney General, Barr. Uwemedimo Nwoko, was in court on 22nd October 2020 to oppose the application. The matter was adjourned to 24th November 2020 for decisions to be taken on motions. In a counter affidavit on 21st October 2020 deposed by Uduak Udo-Udo, a Litigation Officer in the Attorney General Chamber of the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Justice, the Appellants (Akwa Ibom State Government & 7 ors) rejected the replacement of the sole witness, Mr. Joshua Matthew Ayagwung, with Mr. Ukeme Anwan saying the name of a Respondent could not be replaced at this time The State Government and co claimed that Ukeme Anwan (The Deponent) does not have the consent of his colleagues nor the Respondents

By UbongAbasi Ise Governorship and the state house of assembly elections have come and gone, not without leaving the people of Ukanafun community in mourning, as indigenes were shot while coming out to perform their civic responsibility on Saturday. At polling unit 004 in Ikot Udo Ossiom in Ward 2, Ukanafun local government area, Ubokutom Sampson, a man of 25 years of age, was allegedly shot by a military personnel claimed to have accompanied the stakeholders of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, according to an eyewitness who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity.   Sampson was later confirmed dead. Another victim of gunshot at the polling unit was a woman, who was simply described as Mrs. Udom. The source claimed she was also shot by the same soldier who opened fire on Ubokutom Sampson.
