A’Ibom APC crisis deepens as Ward Chairmen protest At State Secretariat
By Uforo John
The lingering crisis in the Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, indicated an alarming dimension last week, when its Ward Chairmen embarked on a protest to press on for their demands.
The APC Ward Chairmen, who expressed their displeasure over the manner in which the party is run in the state also bemoaned what they termed as neglect by leaders and appointees of the party.
Speaking at the State Headquarters of the Party located on Ikot Ekpene Road, Uyo, during the protest, the Chairman, APC Ward Chairmen Forum, Akwa Ibom State, Engr. Saviour Williams, regretted that despite investing their all for the building of the party in the state, they (Ward Chairmen) had been abandoned.
He said: "We are the ones who promote this party (APC) at our respective wards. We are the ones who face stiff opposition by the opposing party. But when it comes to dividends, no one remembers us.
"As far as we know, there is nothing like state or chapter during elections. Elections are conducted at units and wards. If we don't mobilize membership at our wards, how would there be party at chapter, state and even national levels", Williams retorted, and called for an immediate attention to be paid to the Ward Chairmen.
In a Communiqué which they submitted at the State Secretariat, the Ward Chairmen Forum frowned at what they alleged as betrayal of trust by the State Caretaker Chairman, Dr. Ita Udosen.
Part of the communiqué read "we wish to state clearly that the State Caretaker Chairman, Hon Dr. Ita Udosen has betrayed the trust of the party and that of the Ward Chairmen Forum in the state by taking side with the group loyal to the National Secretary, Caretaker Committee, thereby further polarising the party in the state."
"It is very disappointing that despite the lucrative appointments His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR has given to the party leaders in the state since his assumption of office as the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria on 29th May, 2015, the impact of these appointments are not felt by the party faithful".
Addressing the protesting Ward Chairmen, a member of the Registration and Revalidation Committee from the National Headquarters of the APC assured them that their grievances, which he said were genuine, would be channelled to appropriate quarters.
