ASUU Strike: NANS Vows To Disgrace Lecturers
Ahead of its January 7th, 2019 planned mass action to protect the continued strike of Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU), the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has vowed to chase striking lecturers out of the comfort of the university quarters where they are residing.
Issuing the threat via mobile phone on Comfort FM Uyo Thursday, the President of NANS, Comrade Banidele Danielson Akpan described ASUU as hypocritical and self seeking.
“A large percentage of students live off campus and we pay rent. The implication of this strike for many of us including myself is that we have to renew rent this year even when we should have had no business doing so. I for one should have been done with all my academic activities in November/December 2018, but it is now impossible with this strike. I have to pay new rent and I am not comfortable with it.
If we, as students are not comfortable, then ASUU members should not. This is why we will go and chase them out of the University quarters where they are residing. In fact, we will tell the federal government not to pay them salaries again”, he said.
Akpan said the anger of NANS is as a result of the insults directed at its exco by ASUU explaining that thrice after they had been officially invited by the federal government negotiating team to take part in meetings between ASUU and federal government, ASUU did not allow NANS to be part of the meetings.
According to the NANS President if ASUU was indeed agitating for improvements in the university system, why would it not allow students who are beneficiaries to take part in the meeting.
He described ASUU style of always shutting down university as primitive adding that ASUU was pursuing the personal interest of its members which include payment of shortfalls of salaries, earned academic allowance and revitalization funds.
In his view students cannot agree with ASUU that federal government was doing anything wrong because ASUU did not allow them to be part of the meetings to enable NANS see what FG is doing wrong or doing right.
Reacting to the position of NANS President, the Chairman ASUU Uniuyo branch, Dr. Daniel Udoh described Akpan as ignorant and misinformed about the issues of ASUU strike.
He noted that if Akpan was aware that Prof. Wale Babalakin who leads the FG negotiation on ASUU strike had recommended that students of public universities should pay tuition fees after they have collected repayable loan of N1million, he won't be talking the way he is doing presently.
ASUU, Udoh said is against such slavery that would make students indebted to government in the hope of paying back in an economy where there are no jobs.
Udoh said that it was wrong for NANS to insist that it has to be part of the on-going negotiation since it was not part of earlier agreements in 2009, 2013 and 2017.
He said ASUU will continue the strike because the federal government has not shown any clear commitment to heed to its demands.
On the N15.58bn federal government has agreed to release to ASUU, Udoh said this was too little to solve any of the issues raised.
