Bleating Of The Gathering Goats

By UbongAbasi Ise

The Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, has visited Uyo and left with reverberations still shaking the Twitter, Whatsapp groups, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook news websites and blogs.  He has left trails of inks on pages of newspapers.  The electronic media are not ready to give up: they have scalded our eyes and ears with unending repetitions. The images and competitive narratives stemmed from the presidential campaign flag-off have overtaken and saturated all the available media spaces within the Nigerian domain and beyond.  While waiting for the dust to settle, and for sanity to return, let’s look at the root of the truths in the fairytales of empty seats.

It was Ntufam Hilliard Etta, the APC National Vice Chairman for South-South, who transformed his speech into a comic prayer, that referred to those on the other side of the political divide as goats that ate up Nigeria’s yams altogether with the barn that were  trusted to their care for 16 years.  Etta beseeched the Heavens to give the lion President the strength to eat up all the goats gathering to once again seize the country’s common patrimony in 2019.

The goats are not harmful animals anyway, but they can devour food items and cause hunger to men, women and children. What Hilliard did not emphasize about goats in his hilarious prayer was that these kinds of bovidae family animals are commonly known to be senseless. Inasmuch yours truly would not condescend to the level of calling anybody goat, but there are those that surprisingly turned themselves into daft goats in the wake of Buhari’s visit to Uyo.

There are some nonsensical ignoramuses that bleat falsehood out of sheer frustration of seeing massive turnout at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. The sport facility was filled to the capacity. Those who blenched at the sight of the intimidating crowd were lucky to find empty spaces vacated by thousands of APC supporters who rushed into the football pitch defying security measures as the President of the Federal Republic was delivering his speech. They surrounded their President in their thousands with banners. The owners of the empty seats were passionate Buharists who couldn’t bear watching their leader at far range. They came closer to really feel the presence of the Nigerian leader. All the chagrined naysayers did was to use the vacated, empty seats to mislead the public to believe that Buhari spoke to an empty stadium, really sad.

It is time for the other camp and Buhari’s antagonists to wake up from feverish nightmare and face the reality on ground. The people of South-south had turned out en masse to declare unbridled support for Buhari, and no fake pictures can change that fact, not even the bleating of the goats.

Deluding oneself and building tactics on falsehood could be extremely suicidal in any contestation. In an event of election, it is better to accept the realities as they appear and work to improve bad image.  It absolutely doesn’t make any sense for Buhari opponents to dissipate their energies and waste their resources on frivolities. It could have been better for them to base their campaign strategies on issues that could remedy the country they say have failed on all fronts. If  anti-Buharists can’t be articulating on sound economic policies, security, concerns of corrosive corruption, food security, industrialization, then let them surrender before February 2019 as Senator Godswill Akpabio would say, or keep on bleating if they are goats.
