Victory Is Near – Lawyer Assures 5,000 Teachers
By UbongAbasi Ise
Counsel to the 5,000 teachers
sacked by Governor Udom Emmanuel has assured his clients that their victory
over the state government in the court is on the horizon.
Briefing his clients shortly
after the Court of Appeal session in Uyo Wednesday, Barr. Clifford Thomas said
when the motion to dismiss the state government’s appeal in the appellate court
is properly entered, decision will be made on merit, and everything will be
going in favour of the aggrieved teachers.
The 5,000 teachers had filed a
motion praying that the Court strike out whatever appeal brought before it by
the state government after it had exceeded the stipulated time for the filing
of an appeal against the decision of the National Industrial Court in Suit
Number NICN/UY/03/2017 delivered on 18th May 2017.
The appellate court had
instructed the legal team of the 5,000 teachers to make amendment to their
motion, and the next hearing will be fixed on a date after the motion might
have been entered.
Meanwhile, the duo of Obong Nsima
Ekere and Senator Godswill Akpabio were moved with sympathy on Monday as the
5,000 secondary school teachers allegedly sacked by Governor Udom Emmanuel
recounted their misfortunes in the hands of the incumbent state government.
Mr. Sunday Akpan, who led the
embattled teachers as they stormed Uyo Township Stadium to officially declare
their decampment from the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, to the All
Progressives Congress, APC, lamented that some of the 5000 teachers have died,
many have psychologically been traumatized as the result of the unwarranted
sack, while a handful of others have moved out of the state to look for
alternative means of survival, stressing that Mr. Udom Emmanuel is using
taxpayers’ money to battle them in court.
In reaction, the APC
gubernatorial candidate, Obong Nsima Ekere, lauded the 5,000 teachers for
taking a lawful step by approaching the court of competent jurisdiction to
address the matter while asking the aggrieved teachers to relax as the days of
the incumbent state government are numbered.
Having moved with compassion,
Senator Godswill Akpabio stressed that the over 5,000 teachers that were
illegally dismissed by Udom’s government have mothers, fathers, siblings and children that look up to them, hinting that
Obong Nsima Ekere will address their grievances when he assume power in the
coming months.
