Calabar-Itu Road Construction: FG Sweats Over Julius Berger Slow Speed

By UbongAbasi Ise

The leading construction company in Nigeria, Julius Berger PLC, has come under fire as the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang, expressed concern over the snail speed with which the firm handles the construction of Calabar-Itu Road.
Hosted by Atlantic FM in Uyo on the Change Nigeria Watch radio programme, Enang admitted that Julius Berger is quite working but was stressing that the speed was not encouraging.

"I must say with respect to Julius Berger, the company handling the road, the speed at which they are doing the construction is not encouraging. They are there, they are working, but the speed is not encouraging
"When I drew the attention of the Federal Ministry of Works to this development by the construction company, they sent Engr. Bakare, the Director in Charge of the South South to come in for recognizance, and look at the extent of work they have done given the time they started. The team from the ministry made their report," he said.
But it has been reported in the media that a team of engineers from Julius Berger have reassured Senator Ita Enang during his inspection visit to the site weekend that the project will be delivered on record time.
Also, the officials of Arab Contractors, one of the companies bidding for the second phase of work on the Akwa Ibom axis of the Calabar-Itu Road, were reported to be on ground during the assessment tour, and the company’s Deputy Project Manager, Engr. Ahmed Hussein, was giving assurance that the firm will get to work once the procurement process is completed.
