AKHA Crisis: APC Blasts PDP Over Thuggery Claim

By UbongAbasi Ise

The Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has not accepted the responsibility of sponsoring the invasion of the State House of Assembly in Uyo by some youths as claimed by the rival Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP. In a statement, the APC described the allegation as spurious, ill-conceived and an act of desperation by a drowning party.
Reacting to a statement issued by the Akwa Ibom State Chapter of PDP earlier on Monday, the APC said it could never resort to the use of force, violence or tow the path of war in its effort to accede any political office, wondering if the desperation to hold on to power could actually push the PDP to come with such a claim just for the sake of misleading the citizens and offending the public sensibility.
According to the statement released by APC’s State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Nkereuwem Enyongekere, “our attention has been drawn to a certain spurious and ill-conceived claim made by the Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the PDP which is desperately accusing our dear party of sponsoring some youths to invade the premises of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly with the sole aim of disrupting the impeachment processes of the members who recently moved to our party from the PDP.
“It still remains a matter of doubt if desperation to hold on to power could actually push the PDP to concoct such trash from the pit of hell for the sake of misleading the citizens and offending the sensibility of the public. The PDP should know that APC as a party which believes in the rule of law and due process cannot condescend from its pedestal of integrity to wallow in mire of illegalities and  irresponsibility with the PDP - a party that has no room for decency. We expect the law to take its course in what is happening in our State House of Assembly.”
While stating that peace is the major concern of the party in the State, the APC called on all its members within and outside the State House of Assembly to remain law-abiding while the matter is being reported to the security agencies.
“Meanwhile, we are watching the unfolding scenarios in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly with great concern. At appropriate time, the party will make its position categorically clear. For now, we call on our members within and outside Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly to be law-abiding while the matter is being reported to the security agencies to maintain peace in the state as this is our major concern as the Party of change.
“APC, as a democratic party, will never resort to the use of force, violence or tow the path of war in its effort to accede any political party.  Our plan for the taking over from the already failed government is going to be through genuine democratic processes as outlined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“So we reject in totality, such unsubstantiated attribution which is typical of PDP culture: for it is well known for its antics in smuggling problem to where there was none, then shift the blame to innocent party just to garner cheap political sympathy to itself.
“On final note, we disassociate ourselves from any act of negativity, and call on the general public to discountenance such false publication made by a drowning party that is fast losing its grips on Akwa Ibom political space,” the statement reads.
Meanwhile, the Speaker Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Onofiok Luke, had yesterday declared vacant the seats occupied by Mr. Idongesit Ituen ( Itu); Nse Ntuen ( Essien Udium); Gabriel Toby (Ika/Etim Ekpo); Otobong Ndem (Mkpat Enin);  and Victor Udofia (Ikono), following their recent decampment from PDP to APC.
Trouble came when the apparent supporters of the embattled lawmakers thronged the premises of the State House of Assembly to protest following the information that the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, in accordance with the ruling of the Federal High Court which sat in Uyo last Wednesday, would be convening an emergency plenary to officially declare Mr. Idongesit Ituen's seat vacant with the single aim of outmaneuvering the Federal High Court sitting in Uyo from serving the Assembly the Order of Stay of Execution following the motion earlier filed by  Ituen which was adopted by the court.
Media report claimed that Mr. Idongesit Ituen was manhandled by the Speaker’s protocol officers and was prevented from joining yesterday’s plenary even before the vacation order was read and upheld.
