A’Ibom PPRO Defends Police Image In Saviour Akpan’s Radio Programme

The Akwa Ibom State Command Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Odiko Macdon, does not agree with a human rights activist, Saviour Akpan Esq., that there is no longer confidentiality in police investigation.

On Friday 28th May 2021, Macdon called in during Akpan’s Human Rights and You radio programme of the Passion 94.5 FM Uyo monitored by our correspondence, saying the Police Force has so much evolved in the contemporary times, with officers handling cases with utmost confidentiality and high level of professionalism.

Although the PPRO did not rule out total absence of certain policemen who might have been divulging information for pecuniary interests, he was of opinion that unscrupulous elements are found in every system even amongst the human rights activists and the lawyers.

“I don’t say there are no unscrupulous elements in the police. They are in every system: they are amongst the lawyers, and even found among the human rights people. And there are very good ones who side the course of justice. In every system you have the bad eggs. I know that there are policemen, who for one or two pecuniary interests might have divulged information, however in contemporary times, the police have evolved. There is more of confidentiality,” he said.

He also pointed out that some of the confidential information are leaked by the complainants themselves and in such situation the police are not to be blamed.

While Saviour Akpan in the evening radio programme was urging the police officers to imbibe core principles of investigation in handling cases, describing an investigator as someone who could keep utmost secret, he regretted lack of confidentiality among men of the Nigerian Police Force as affecting policing in the country, a position contested by Odiko Macdon.
