Akpabio Vs Ekpenyong: PDP Witness Accuses AKSG, INEC Of Deceit … As Corps Members Fail To Show Proof Of Violence In Essien Udim
By UbongAbasi Ise
Ajebitimi Abraham, a
subpoenaed witness called by the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, who presided
over polling Unit 002 in Ikpe Annang Ward in Essien Udim local government area
during presidential and national assembly elections, believes both the Akwa
Ibom State government and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC,
were not telling the truth about the elections held in Akwa Ibom Northwest
Senatorial district as he claimed elections in his ward were fraught by
violence and irregularities.
While on cross-examination,
the petitioner’s lead counsel, S.I. Ameh, SAN, asked the witness to read some
paragraphs on page 11 of the Nation Newspaper of Monday June 24, 2019 in which
the Akwa Ibom State Government in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government describe elections in Akwa Ibom State as generally free and fairly conducted based
on reports by both domestic and foreign observers.
After reading the paragraph,
Abraham said the state government statement was not true. He further insisted
that INEC’s reply in paragraph 6 which described the 2019 presidential and
national assembly elections in Akwa Ibom Northwest Senatorial District as being
amongst the freest and most credible elections ever conducted since 1999 was
not also true as there was no election in Essien Udim.
But paragraph 60 of INEC’s
reply deposed before the tribunal claimed that violence marred the electoral
processes in the area which made Ameh to question why INEC is speaking with
both mouth, thereby throwing the courtroom into laughter.
Mr. Adetimi Abraham, claimed
that one person was accredited in his unit according to voter register (R68)
and it was the only accreditation done in the entire Ikpe Annang ward.
But he later said the total
number of registered voters stands at 412, while 400 was accredited and APC
polled 256 while PDP had 10 votes.
While claiming that the result
was obtained due to threat to life, Abraham admitted he did not write to INEC
to report the incidence of abduction and general state of insecurity.
He did not also show evidence
before the tribunal that he was a member of the National Youth Service Corps,
NYSC, drafted as ad hoc staff of INEC.
Other two witnesses, Mr.
Endurance Osakere who was the presiding officer for polling Unit 002 in
Ekpenyong 1 ward and Miss Halleluiah Grace Oni, who presided over Unit 007 in
Ukana West II ward in Essien Udim local government area all claimed there were
no elections in their various wards owing to abduction of INEC ad hoc staff and
hijacking of electoral materials but did not produce any proof that they
reported the incidence to INEC neither did they show identification as corps
members engaged by INEC.
