Police, Judiciary Urged To Implement Anti-Cultism Law In A’Ibom

Arising from the ensuing cultists’ warfare in some parts of the State, a community leader Obong Dickson Inyang, has called on the State Police Command and the Judiciary to ensure strict execution of the recommendation of the State law on cultism to deter young people from taking part in cult activities in the State.
Obong Inyang, who made the call yesterday, when our reporter called on him in Abak local government area, said the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly had made a bold step to eradicate cultism in the State by enacting the Anti-cultism law of Akwa Ibom State, and argued that it is now left for the Police and other Security Operatives in the State, and the Judiciary to act in compliance with the law. He maintained that when some kingpins of the various cult groups in the State are tracked by security intelligent and convicted according to the law by the judiciary, the younger ones would be deterred to carry out the heinous activity in the State.

The community leader commended Akwa Ibom State Government under the Governor, Deacon Udom Emmanuel for maintaining a polar position on the issue of cultism in Akwa Ibom State, noting that some political leaders and politicians pamper and promote cultism.
He further stressed the need for heads of schools and other institutions in the State to check within the ranks and files of their organizations to detect cultists and to show them their way out for the betterment of Akwa Ibom State.
He regretted incessant killings of innocent residents in Abak and other parts of Akwa Ibom State by hoodlums suspected to be cultists and armed robbers.
In the same vein, a cleric in Essien Udim Local Government, Rev. Okon Useh, decried cultists attacks on people in the area.
Rev. Useh, disclosed that cultists invaded a community in the area and unleashed mayhem on residents following what they described as a reprisal attack on another cult group, who the cultists said attacked their member in the community.
The man of God argued that it is possible to get rid of cultists in any community in the State if leaders of the community live up to their leadership responsibilities. He maintained that one of the responsibilities of people in power and authority is to provide security for the subjects and reasoned that at the village and community levels of governments, the village head and community leaders owe the subjects the responsibility to provide security through robust collaboration with the Police and other Security outfits constituted by law in Nigeria.
