Eket Youths Protest Relocation Of Qua Steel Company To Onna
The Eket Youth Forum, EYF, has
raised alarm over the relocation of the moribund Qua Steel Company from Eket to
Onna, Governor Udom Emmanuel's local government area.
In a letter addressed to the
Governor, the EYF said it was in possession of a document where the Governor
endorsed the relocation of the industry with a prominent son of Eket, Brigadier
General Anthony Etukudo (rtd) counter-endorsing it.
The group said that the relocation
was painful because Eket has no industry whereas Onna is already hosting a
number of State Government-promoted industries.
"We would have glossed over
this matter if not for the pains of dearth of any functional industry, be it
cottage or otherwise. Upon all the industrial concerns of the State Government,
Eket is yet to be the beneficiary of one. We find it extremely difficult to
maintain stable hearts in view of this action which we consider as being pushed
down our throats," it said.
The group warned that "We shall
not allow this type of oppressive decision if our prayers fail to bring about a
rethink and the complete abdication of this wrongful action foisted on the
heads of the Eket people."
The EYF threatened to withdraw
support for the Governor's second term bid if he fails to reverse the
outrageous decision.
The letter was signed by Bassey
Sampson, President, Udo Akwaowo, Secretary General, Anthony Imoh, Publicity
Secretary, Kingsley Etukudo, Welfare Secretary and Paul Nkanta, Ex-officio
Member for members of the EYF
