PDP Collapses In Ikot Abasi
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) collapsed in three of the five clans of Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State on Friday with the defection of over ten thousand of its members.
The defectors, numbering over 2,000 in Ikpa Ibekwe clan, over 3,500 in Ukpum Ete clan and over 6,000 in Ikpa Nung Asang clan, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) during a tour of the three clans, each with two wards, by the APC leadership in Ikot Abasi.
Receiving the defectors, Mr Ubong Ekpo, the Ikot Abasi APC chapter chairman, assured them of equal rights and privileges with old members of APC and declared a minute silence for the dead PDP at each stop of the clan tour.
Elder Idorenyin Ekere, the elder brother of the APC Governorship Candidate, Obong Nsima Ekere, who witnessed the defection in the three clans, said the calibre of defectors had devastated PDP in Ikpa Nung Asang clan and hinted that the Mission Road in Essene in the clan will be completely reconstructed by the NDDC within the next two months.
At Ukpum Ete clan, Elder Ekere thanked the people for the massive support for Obong Ekere who has sited many projects in the clan.
Elder Ekere hailed the defectors in Ikpa Ibekwe clan, the headquarters of Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, for setting the pace in the massive support for the APC in Ikot Abasi.
Responding on behalf of the defectors in Ikpa Nung Asang clan, Dr Idorenyin Esikot, an associate professor at University of Uyo who resigned recently as Governor Udom Emmanuel's Special Assistant on Small and Medium Enterprises, said the only way to redeem Akwa Ibom State from a government of deceit was to support Obong Ekere who has better credentials for the governorship than the present Governor.
He numbered the Governor's aides that have resigned so far as 15, hinting that more will soon resign.
Barr Iso Nsefi, a former Ikot Abasi PDP chapter legal adviser, who also spoke on behalf of the Ikpa Nung Asang defectors, said more defections were underway that will empty PDP in the clan.
Mr Imo Friday, who spoke on behalf of the defectors in Ukpum Ete, said they joined the APC because they looked like enemies of progress remaining in PDP and opposing the governorship ambition of Obong Ekere, a son of the soil.
Mr, Asuquo Umoh, a security and safety expert who led the Ikpa Ibekwe defectors, assured the APC leadership of their resolve to work hard for the victory of the party in all the elections.
Dr Akpan Micah Umoh, a former Member of House of Representatives for Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency, said Obong Ekere's ambition was no longer a partisan matter but a communal one, adding that in Obong Ekere Ikot Abasi has a lifetime opportunity to produce a Governor, moreover as the APC Governorship Candidate has massive support from the rest of the state.
Pastor Udo Isaiah, the Special Assistant on Administration and Human Resources to the NDDC Managing Director, said a vote for APC meant a vote for prosperity.
Engr Uko Ekpe, the APC House of Assembly Candidate for Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo State Constituency, said there was no reason for any Ikot Abasi person to support a Governor that has failed to tar any road in Ikot Abasi unlike Obong Ekere who has transformed the infrastructure of the area as Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
He hailed Obong Ekere as a performer and the very best for the governorship of the state.
Prince Enobong Ufot, a former Chairman of Ikot Abasi Local Government, said Obong Ekere was on a divine mission to redeem Akwa Ibom State, having performed creditably at NDDC and expressed hope that Obong Ekere would facilitate the revival of ALSCON as Governor.
Mrs. Uduak Ufot, a prominent woman leader in Ikot Abasi, predicted that the few remaining PDP members in Ikot Abasi will join the APC when the APC starts its ward tour soon.
