Entitlements: A'Ibom Judges Tackle Udom... Decry Attempt To Frustrate Justice System

Most States in Nigeria have strategized provisions for judges and the judiciary because of its outstanding roles in good governance and democracy but in Akwa Ibom State, going by feelers, the reverse is the case as Judges decry poor conditions of service and ill-treatments.

The Sensor authoritatively gathered that baring any change of thoughts, Judges in Akwa Ibom State may visit Governor Udom Emmanuel today, to protest and bare their minds on the payment of paltry sum of N2.5 million vacation and medical allowances, which the judges described as insulting and suffocating considering the quantity of works they do to protect democracy and secure justice for the citizens of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria.

According to them, this is the worst payment they ever collected since 2007 -2015 when the former governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio embraced payment of vacation and medical allowance to Judges in Akwa Ibom State. They said it is annoying and inconsiderate to pay a Judge N2.5million Naira a year for his medical and vacation need.

A source said Judges are angry, owing to the fact that Governor Udom Emmanuel currently gives out Prado Jeeps to politicians and traditional rulers but failed to realize that there are Judges without Prado Jeeps and others that are using unserviceable Prado Jeeps, that were due for replacement after four years of use.
According to the source, there is a Judge in Akwa Ibom State under Governor Udom administration that cannot afford N720,000 to buy and replace the exhaust of his five years old Prado Jeep whereas in other States of the federation, The Sensor learnt, State Government gives out houses to Judges on retirement.
The Akwa Ibom State Judges are currently lamenting their ill-treatment by Governor Udom Emmanuel administration simply because Governor Udom knows that they cannot impeach him the same way the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly can do. “So you can see why the governor is giving out huge sums of money to members of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly to avoid being hurt or impeached.” the source said.
He further explained the marginalization of the Judiciary by the Udom administration, pointing out the eleven months closure of customary courts in the State as a result of lack of money to conduct interviews for the reconstitution of the customary courts after its dissolution in April this year. It is disturbing that a government will block the route to justice simply because the government wants to frustrate the Judiciary and citizens seeking justice at the customary level of our jurisprudence.” The source added.
