Revealed! AKSG Makes U-Turn On Immortalising Akpabio

A government official in the Ministry of Sports and Youths Development has confided in our correspondent alleging that Governor Udom Emmanuel does not want Senator Godswill Akpabio’s name linked with the international stadium situated in Uyo, the capital city.
The source, who strongly craved anonymity, revealed that it was covertly discussed in the government circle with special instruction to a section of the media sympathetic to the State Government, that the former governor’s name be expunged from the mention of the sports edifice.
He noted that any publicity nowadays sponsored by the state government would only refer to the stadium as Nest of Champions instead of Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
The source added that Udom Emmanuel-led administration is tactically making a U-turn on the immortalization of the former governor only because he defected from the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
When our correspondent contacted the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Charles Udoh, to inquire about the veracity of the claim on the renaming of the stadium, the response was that Governor Udom Emmanuel is too focused on development than indulging in trivialities.
The Commissioner further wondered if the name of a stadium could impact the economy of the state, create jobs and alleviate poverty, saying people should focus on matters that touch lives.
“The governor is too focused in continuing to deliver sustainable development to indulge in such fickle minded trivialities. How would the name of a stadium impact the economy of the state? Does the name of the stadium create jobs? Does it alleviate poverty? As a people, we should focus on subjects that touch lives,” he said.
Mr. Charles Udoh further stated the need of educating people to desist from dissipating their energy on trivialities for the sake of their children and the posterity.
Meanwhile, the governorship candidate of the APC, Obong Nsima Ekere, had promised in September at the Uyo Township Stadium during a solidarity rally organized in honour of President Muhammadu Buhari and himself, that one of the beautiful dualized carriage ways constructed by the former governor, Senator Godswill Akpabio, will be named after him (Akpabio) once he get into the office. He also said that once he is assume the leadership of the state he will rename the international airport in the state after Obong Victor Attah to immortalize him for a reward for envisioning the landmark project, while Late Obong Akpan Isemin, the former governor of the state, who was popular in fighting “etok-etok syndrome,” or inferiority complex, would have in his honour, Ibom Tropicana named after him should he makes it to the Hilltop Mansion come 29th May, 2019.
