Akwa Ibom State may enjoy economic advantage in the production and exportation of electricity insulators as Dr. Clement Ekong, a senior lecturer in the Department of Fine and Industrial Arts in the University of Uyo, produces electric components said to have been made up of 100% of materials sourced within the state.

Ekong, who recently held exhibition tagged, Bend-Down-Select in the University’s Town Campus, said with abundance of raw materials in Akwa Ibom, it is possible to commence the production of electricity insulators.

“I am trying to represent the state; it is a clarion call for Africans and Nigerians to look inwards.

Bend-down-Select has electric insulators; all these are to tell us that it is possible to make them here. Electricity insulator is 100% made in my studio, and has passed through a normal test by the power and mines experts. It is good enough for non-conductivity; it is good enough to serve as something that could be used in that nature,” he said.

Ekong, who put over 300 items on display, recalled how Akwa Ibom had Quality Ceramic Company which depended on the locally sourced materials, producing one of the best tiles in West Africa until the company closed down.

Some of the artistic objects designed by the university don for the Bend-Down-Select exhibition were what he described as ‘fruities’, symbolizing agriculture. He stated the need to prioritize agriculture as abandonment of the sector into the hands of the peasants has led to a situation of food scarcity.

“We supposed to develop our agriculture before shutting down borders. Agriculture is not something that should be left in the hands of the peasant farmers; that is why we don’t have food around. We don’t do farming. So if we do it, we would be food sufficient,” said Ekong.

In his remarks, the Curator, Dr. Efiong Eyefoki, bemoaned African’s l disregard for home-made products while embracing fairly used materials imported from other continents.

He lauded Dr. Clement Ekong for his initiative to remind the importance and originality of African products, saying it is time to look inward.

“Here has become a dumping ground. I appreciate the exhibitor for the foresight to remind us where we had been and where we are.  It is very disgraceful in Africa that we are so proud of second hand products. It is very appalling that these things are deliberately done.

“It is a reminder; we have to rework ourselves and begin to move away from accepting and assimilating values that are out of date.  When you are thinking about Bend-Down Select, also think about who you are,” he said.

The exhibition which was declared open by the immediate past Director, Center for Entrepreneurial Development, University of Uyo, Dr. Abasiubong Williams, had both the university community and members of the public in attendance, and the venue became the centre of attraction in the campus.
