The social governance protagonist, Arc. Ezekiel Nyaetok, has seen the implementation of the International Worship Centre project proposed by Udom Emmanuel-led state government as a source of hardship given the present economic realities, calling on Christians to beg the Akwa Ibom State Government to suspend the project at the moment.

While speaking on the XL FM 106.9 Uyo on Wednesday 25th November, 2020, Nyaetok said the project which has a preliminary budget of about N10 billion would increase economic woes in the state if implemented as its budgetary allocation in this year’s budget alone stands at about N6 billion. He said executing the project would gulp up scarce funds that could have been channeled to more critical areas.

“The International Worship Centre has a preliminary budget of about N10 billion. Last year there was a budget of about N2 billion allocated to it, and in this year’s budget, there is a provision of N6 billion. I want to use this opportunity to appeal to every Christian to help me appeal that this project be stepped down.

“We are in a difficult situation and things would get more difficult, and as a result we need money in setting critical areas” he said.

The seasoned architect stressed how zero percent is allocated to scholarship and how the budgetary size for the worship centre exceeded the total allocation to education, healthcare, youth and sports and agriculture for this year.

Arc. Ezekiel Nyaetok also decried the state’s government’s indifference to Akwa Ibom Youth Development Bill which has been passed in the state house of assembly but awaiting governor’s assent. He wondered why N6 billion could be allotted to the International Worship Centre while the laudable youth programme receive no funding.

Also speaking during the radio programme was Mr. James Akpan, BudgIT’s Project Tracking Officer for Akwa Ibom who said there is no project delivery in line with the budgetary projection in Akwa Ibom since BudgIT came into the state in 2017.

Akpan further said his company operate by looking at items in the budget line by line and then approach the communities where those projects supposed to be sited in order to ascertain the level of implementation. According to him, findings generally show very low percent of budget implementation in Akwa Ibom State. He stressed that people are not carried along in budgetary drafting as state’s development ought to be inclusive moving from bottom to top.
