Joe Biden Is An EndSARS Protester – A’Ibom Lawyer Warns FG
The Executive Director of Foundation for Civic Education, Human Rights and Development Advancement (FoCEHRaDA), Clifford Thomas, Esq., says if a United State’s Democrat party candidate, Joe Biden, is sworn in as President on January 20, 2021, then some Nigerian leaders may have to brace up for tough international sanctions over gross human rights abuse.
While speaking on Passion FM 94.5 Uyo morning programme hosted by Mr. Ikechukwu Juwei on Thursday 12th November, 2020 , Barr. Thomas reminded how Biden condemned military’s shooting during EndSARS protests at Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos on October 20, 2020.
It would be recalled that in the wake of the Lekki Toll gate incident, Joe Biden, the former US Vice President and now Presidential hopeful, commented on the alleged shooting of Protesters as well as violence across the country.
According to him,” I urge President Buhari and the Nigerian military to cease the violent crackdown on protesters in Nigeria, which has already resulted in several deaths. My heart goes out to all those who have lost a loved one in the violence. The United States must stand with Nigerians who are peacefully demonstrating for police reform and seeking an end to corruption in their democracy. I encourage the government to engage in a good-faith dialogue with civil society to address these long-standing grievances and work together for a more just and inclusive Nigeria.”
Clifford Thomas, who referred to Joe Biden as an EndSARS protester on the radio programme, warned Nigerian government against repressive tendencies as US government if controlled by Biden from 2021, would enforce harsh sanctions on Nigerian leaders.
He said going after the perceived EndSARs sponsors is not in line with the freedom of expression provision as enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution, adding that nothing is wrong to have individuals supporting peaceful demonstrators with food and water.
The human rights lawyer further warned that clamping down on the alleged sponsors of the EndSAR movement would further exacerbate human rights abuse situation in the country, noting that the protests sprang as a reaction to bad governance.
