Esit Eket Council Chairman's Shameful Display of Rascality

By UbongAbasi Ise

Power can be far more dangerous than brutish alcoholic concoction. Give it to the cool-headed, it would freeze his brains, and makes him very clueless. You give it to a hot-headed, it bakes his brains and turn him to a blind and feral crook. If you give the power to a fool,  it turns his brains upside down and everything ends in disarray. Why our society is permanently malfunctioning is because the brain-box that is controlling the entire system is suffering from damaging effect of excess power, and it is, simply, not working.

Taking a look on the front page of The Post Newspaper edition of Friday 15th May 2020, one wiould see "...Usoro Akpanusoh is a stupid man." This was part of the interview caption attributed to Esit Eket local government council chairman, Mr. Iniobong Robson. A read through the content exposes poverty of ideas and outright display of plebeian rascality. When the newspaper crew asked the honorable chairman if he actually disrespected his State House of Assembly representative, Dr. Usoro Akpanusoh, by calling him stupid at the residence of the political leader, he replied in affirmation: "...he acted stupidly and up till now he is even acting more foolishly than he acted that day."  This utterance reflects the kind of feckless individuals we have as leaders; it signals their  breed of politics imbued with subterranean hatred for followership. For the fact that Akpanusoh is an indigene of Esit Eket, the council boss should have understood that the lawmaker is also amongst his subjects that handed him the mandate to lead Esit Eket local government area. No matter how muffy the chairman was at the time of the press interview, he could have resisted the temptation of  using uncouth remarks on the assemblyman, if not for anything else but for the sake of dignity of the good people of Esit Eket/Ibeno State Constituency.

Robson's apparent sociopathic hatred for Akpanusoh, including others opposing his ambition for another term as chairman in office and, by extension, his purported interest in the state house of assembly seat in 2023, has made him to appear ansty and vindictive to his own people. Because he sees Usoro Akpanusoh as a potential rival in the 2023 race, he would now do everything possible to frustrate the lawmaker's expected third term bid. Recently, when Akpanusoh moved trucks of food items and other relief materials to his constituents to help cushion the effect of the total lockdown in the area, the council chairman allegedly mobilized hoodlums who waylaid the lawmaker and his entourage at Edo community in Esit Eket, beat the members of the train, pursued them into the bush and scattered the bags of rice and other palliatives, thus leaving the items for daylight pilfering. Such act could be described as the height of voodooism and witchcraftcy. The intention of that dastardly villainous act was to stunt the continuous growth of the lawmaker's popularity in the area. If Akpanusoh did not move away from the scene of the attack on time, those thugs would, probably, have descended on him mercilessly.

The worst part of the sad narrative was that, at the end, the intended beneficiaries of the palliatives missed the goodwill of their representative apparently because of their council boss's crude pride to show that he is a political hummock in Esit Eket . This is how power makes a fellow mad and cause him to set fire on the very roof that covers his head.

It would be recalled that on March 16, 2020, the Akwa Ibom State governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, while exercising his powers as conferred on him by Section 70 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. 38, Vol. 2, Laws of Akwa lbom State, 2000, proscribed all cult groups and activities in the state. His administration further sounded stern warning that cultists would never occupy any political office in Akwa Ibom. If Udom's government really meant what it says, would it be possible for a character like Iniobong Robson to continue his stay in power following accusations trailing him of being an ultimate sponsor of cultism in Esit Eket?  Could we recall a Petition purportedly sent  to the DSS by a  whistle-blower, Mr Benjamin Etito  from Ikpa Town in Esit Eket local government area, who disclosed to the security agency about the secret and dirty activities Mr. Chairman has been indulging using some cult members to unleash violence on the people of Esit Eket  all in search of another tenure in the council? The Akwa Ibom State government and appropriate security agency needs to look into Esit Eket issue.

When the control of democracy falls into the hands of riff-raffs, they make it degenerate into mobocracy. Governance is not for the splenetics but for matured minds and noble characters. I pray may time come when our leaders would lead us with conscience and moral rectitude.
