Covid-19 Lockdown: PDP Stalwarts Hijack Udom's Palliatives To Villages
By UbongAbasi Ise
Governor Udom Emmanuel's effort to ameloriate the hardship caused by the 14-day lockdown in Akwa Ibom State may come to nought as some inflencial members of the Peoples' Democratic Party, PDP, have been accused of cornering the relief materials meant for the indigents of the rural areas in the state to their own use.
According to a source who spoke with our correspondent on condition of anonymity, the forms for the selection of the beneficiaries were to be handled by the village heads but they have since been hijacked by the PDP stalwarts in different local government areas.
The source noted that village heads in Adiasim and Okon in Essien Udim local government areas, in particular, are yet to know the whereabout of the palliative forms as at the time he made the revelation.
He stressed that this underhand practice has been replicated in nearly all the local government areas in the state.
The source further called on Mr. Udom Emmanuel to immediately swing into action in order to retrieve the relief materials from the hands of the unscrupulous elements for the intended beneficiaries.
It would be recalled that the state government recently announced plans for provision of relief materials such as rice, garri, flour and other essential food items to cushion the effects of the Quarantine and Restriction of Movement Regulations 2020.
The Secretary to the State Government, Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem in a media parley in Uyo had said that the mode of disbursements to villages would help the palliatives trickle down to give succour to all and sundry.
