Politicians And Their Abracadabra

By UbongAbasi Ise
There are two political parties I know of: they are the power class and the political subjects. Those that were at Onna for Pa Gabriel Nkanang’s burial could get this picture clearer.
The polemics of Nigerian political construct were glaring at the grand funeral in that one wouldn’t find it difficult to locate the level they belong in the political game. Although there was nothing to stratify the multitude of sympathizers along the APC-PDP faultline, there actually existed class tendency naturally conditioned by individuals’ political status. While the members of political power class were seen consorting together, playing and teasing themselves as if they had no history of enmity, their subjects cum followers at the lower rung of the political ladder were apparently left to mingle with those of their class. This explains that APC, PDP, and the likes are mere abstractions that only enable upper political class to manipulate the system and share power amongst themselves.
This may sound Marxist, but it is a fact that should not be avoided. This write-up is not to argue against the apparent class stratification as observed in Onna - because it is the belief of this writer that nature, as a system, can’t be Procrustean in its approach to treating every human; people can never be received as equals at any gathering. But the underlying message drawn from the freemasonry of power class at Onna points to the fact that there is a line of demarcation between this tiny group of the population that eats on the table and the subjected majority that squats on the floor in waits for the crumbs.
The two classes in politics are not difficult to distinguish. One can say that members of the power class are unaffected by death traps called federal roads because they fly on air to and fro any part of the country, while their subjected counterparts tend to be complaining of the deplorable condition of roads like East-West and Calabar-Itu roads. The children of the power-class-political-party would either study abroad or be enrolled in the best of private schools in the country while that of the subjects wallow in the rotten system of public education. Unemployment does not worry the children of the power class because juicy jobs of choice are waiting for them anytime they are ready to work. It is the children of the lower class that pray and fast for job opportunities many years after pulling through the hell of public educational system.
Every day political subjects complain of epileptic power supply or outright blackout. But this can't panic the power class because they can afford the cost of electricity no matter the condition of economy. This powerful group would waste no time in embarking on medical tourism in Asia, Europe, and America even at the slightest feeling of headache while the downtrodden come face to face with the dearth of public health facilities. It is also the common people that suffer the worst hit of insurgency in the country while their political overlords and their families stay safe and protected.
The reason the powerful clique regrouped at Onna was that their class member was burying his father, to keep it simple and plain. They can attend occasion of their kinds without minding if one is affiliated to APC, PDP or whatever. One should ponder how many of the ordinary APC members in Akwa Ibom State would have been lucky enough to have their fellow party members as prominent as Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Senator Ahmed Lawan, Alhaji Umar Ganduje, Senator John Akpanudoedeghe, Obong Umana Okon Umana and Senator Godswill Akpabio as represented by wife at their event. Therefore it is time for the majority of common people to come out from the veil of partisan politics to ask this power class of good roads, electricity, quality education, clean water, employment, and improved economy.
For how long would the power class continue to use the old trick of profuse promises that are mere abracadabra devised only to cast spell on the majority thus gobbling up their sense of reasoning? Until the power class begin to demonstrate their confidence in the system by sending their wards to our public schools, treat themselves at government-owned hospitals, travel by road to any part of the country and depends on DISCOs for power supply, every promise of better days would still remain a matter of bluffing.
If actually the majority voted the ruling class to power, then why are they always shying away from unanimously demanding accountability from this power clique? As the saying goes, it is because of how humans referred the vulture, it then grows beyond what they could eat. This is also a case of running away after dressing up a big masquerade. Political leaders shouldn't be big enough to give account to the people that elected them.
The young people of this age have so much massaged the ego of these powerful rulers thus making them luxuriate and sleep in power. What happens when youth groups visit politicians? Funny enough they declare solidarity, discuss opponents, drink whiskey, get some crumbs for transportation and then return to tell their girlfriends that they were at the meeting with the honourable. Next time they embark on similar so-called political visit, the honourable would act very busy to avoid another round of waste of time and energy. Therefore the only way political officials would respect the youth is when youth bb groups demand instead of begging politicians' attention to discuss pressing issues affecting their society.
Next time political subjects draw swords against themselves because of their principals, they should bear in mind that the present political order forms them into a common class condemned to endure bad roads, poor healthcare system, power outage, hostile economic atmosphere, joblessness, and poor infrastructures. By refusing to be sucked into sychophancy and used as pawns, the political subjects should learn to influence the system for their overall interest because they are the majority.
