Rerun: Sunny Ibuot Thumps Up Akpabio Over Withdrawal, Sends Red Alert To APC …As Akpabio Hammers On Igini’s Removal

By UbongAbasi Ise

Pastor Sunny Ibuot, the Senior Special Adviser to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Political and Legislative Affairs, says he knew Senator Godswill Akpabio would not contest a rerun of Akwa Ibom Northwest Senatorial election.
While speaking on Planet FM in Uyo yesterday, Pastor Ibuot said Senator Akpabio known to him for a long time understands the implications of having to abandon ministerial job for a rerun election whose outcome is uncertain, describing his decision of pulling out from the race as a win-win situation.
On Akpabio’s directive to his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, to shop for his replacement for the January 2020 rerun, Ibuot charged legal practitioners to look into the law to see if there is such arrangement.
The immediate past secretary to the Technical Committee on Agriculture and Food Sufficiency said the rerun of Akwa Ibom Northwest senatorial election including rerun of Ikot Ekpene Federal constituency as well as Essien Udim state house of assembly would offer the opportunity to test the popularity of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, in the state, believing every election conducted in the state at present will be won by the PDP.
Recalled that Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Minister of Niger-Delta Affairs, in a letter to the national chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomole, dated December 2, 2019, announced his voluntary withdrawal of candidature in the Akwa Ibom Northwest senatorial district election, though the letter was widely made public on Wednesday.

The letter reads: “I have taken into consideration the critical national assignment bestowed upon me by Mr. President which will be of immense importance to Nigerians and in particular the indigenes of the Niger Delta region and have resolved to remain in office as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to further discharge my contributions and services to our great fatherland.”
He further urged the APC national chairman to press for the redeployment of Mr. Mike Igini as the resident electoral commissioner of Akwa Ibom State if a credible election is to be guaranteed.
“Mr. Chairman may I advice that the National Working Committee of our party should reiterate our earlier plea to the chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to redeploy Mr. Mike Igini (the Resident Electoral Commissioner) from Akwa Ibom State if a free and transparent re-run exercise is to be guaranteed,” the letter reads.
