Speaking with The Sensor, the author of the book, Dr. Uwem Akpan, said the essence of the event is to reconstruct Ibibio history and put everything in proper perspective. Akpancalled on all Ibibio sons and daughters and all lovers of history to come and bear witness to the epoch-making eventtagged, ‘Witness to History.’
The refuted book, Ikono The Cradle Of Ibibio Nation, published in 2001, written by Dr. David Ukpong, Dr. Martin Akpan and Nnamso Akang, who came under the umbrella of Ikono-Ini Research and Documentation Committee, IRDC, were sponsored by Mboho Ndito Ikono Ndo Ini to reconstruct Ikono/Ini history. Dr. Uwen Akpan described their work as “the scam of the millennium,” adding that “it is a mere story book with very little historical content.”
He maintained that the authors of the book were bereft of history background and were sponsored with the intent to establish cultural supremacy of Ikono over the entire Ibibio land.
“It was a sponsored work undertaken by non-historians who could not identify, collect, collate and use evidence. The purpose was for empire-building, foisting of cultural hegemony and deliberately presenting the people of Ikono or that section of Ibibio as primus inter pares over Ibibio land,” he said.
