Sea Pirates Bow As AKS Ex-Militant Leaders Take Over Surveillance Of Water Ways
The Akwa Ibom State water ways has experienced tremendous peace from frequent attack by sea pirates as a result of a combined intervention of ex-militant leaders and a team of amphibious Mobile Police squad from the office of the Inspector General of Police, courtesy of the State Ministry of Agriculture and Women Development.
Speaking to our correspondent in Mbo local government area of the State on Saturday, the chairman of Mbo Indigenous Fishers Association, Mr Offong Ettekamba said that there is a remarkable peace in the sea within the past two weeks since the amphibious Police led by ex-militant leaders took over the surveillance of the water ways.
Mr Ettekamba called on the State Government to as a matter of urgency, maintain the current security measures instituted by the State Ministry of Agriculture and Women Development which contracted Creek & Estuary Limited to partner the State Government in the security of the maritime industry.
He commended the Commissioner for Agriculture and Women Development, Mrs Gloria Edet for the intervention and maintained that with the involvement of ex-militants in the security of the water ways, Sea Pirates will find it difficult to operate in the State.
Collaborating the opinion of the fishermen, the chairman, ex-militants leaders Forum, General Kingsley Umoh Bassey, aka 007 said that those who operate in Akwa Ibom water ways as sea pirates are from other States of the Niger Delta Region who find it difficult to operate in their State of origin because of the involvement of Ex-militants in the surveillance of the water ways.
He also appealed on the State Government to utilize the benefits of the Federal Government Amnesty program by fully involving Ex-militants who are familiar with the terrain of the creeks in the security operations of the maritime industry in synergy with conversational security agencies.
Also speaking, the CEO of Creek & Estuary Limited, General Effiong Okon Etim, aka lock up, said that the water ways is now safe for fishermen as the involvement of ex-militants in surveillance will put a permanent stop to the rampant criminality of sea pirates in the State.
He thanked the people of the coastal area of the State for their support in the course of the duty of the combined team of the amphibious Police Force and ex-militants leaders and averred that henceforth, Sea piracy will be a thing of the past if the State Government will continue in its resolve to rid the water ways of criminality.
