The new Chairman of the Governing Council of  Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, has vowed to wield a big stick against lecturers indulging in awarding marks to students in return for sex and money, including sales of textbooks beyond approved price limits.

The chairman, Barr. Ekpeyong Ntekim who is the former Akwa Ibom State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, was over weekend, held his maiden interactive meeting with the staff of the institution, and he used the opportunity to address corrupt practices and unethical conducts perpetrated by some lecturers which portray the polytechnic in the bad light.
The meeting was an ample opportunity to warn the school authority against victimization of students, while calling on improvement in the staff-students relationship.

According to Ntekim, "We shall be very decisive in policy initiation, formulation and implementation to help achieve envisaged goals and objectives. But vices such as cash for marks, sex for marks, sales of textbooks beyond the statutory approved limits, sorting, etc will not be condoned. Let our religion reflect in our code of conduct and relationship with staff and students which God has placed under our care.

"Parents go through a lot to sponsor their children and wards to school here and they (students) are the raw materials needed for the smooth running and continuous existence of the polytechnic. Staff must ensure that they treat students the way they will want their own children to be treated.

"Avoid victimization of surbodinates under you if you are in a position of authority. Unless you have not been a victim of injustice to know the ills of victimization, let's shun evil vices. Immorality, impropriety is corruption but the innocent need not fear, only the guilty need to be afraid.

"It is God that gives position. Use your privileged position to enhance humanity and the good of the institution."

Barr. Ekpenyong Ntekim announced that the recent audit carried out by management was not to witch-hunt any staff but to help the Acting Rector in the segmentalization of the needs of individual departments for the purpose of the forthcoming accreditation exercise.

Ntekim explained that he has not come to destroy what has been put in place and built over the years but to strengthen it in line with extant laws and assured all of his readiness to liaise with management to ensure the institution hasva befitting assembly hall worthy of a 21st century polytechnic.

He said the governing council under his watch will continue to do its best to ensure that the environment is worthy of an academic environment and be conducive enough for learning and research.

Also speaking, the ASUP Chairman, Comrade Iboro Ibara, called on the need for the council chairman to probe the over N2.5billion TETFUND grant accrued to the institution in the past 10 years. He dislclosed that about N400 million grants from Akwa Ibom State Government meant for the accreditation of courses  between 2013 and 2018 are not accounted for, insisting that only a review or audit of funds accruing to the institution and the insistence on proper usage of resources accruing to the institution will restore the lost glory of the institution.

He urged the new governing council Chairman to help the institution overcome its structural deficit such as lack of a befitting Assembly Hall.
In his response, the Acting Rector, Dr Barr Moses Umobong, assured the Council Chairman of the support and solidarity of staff and management towards enhancing collaboration between the relevant stakeholders of the institution.
