Incompetence Of Nigerian Sailors Blamed On Insufficient Facilities

By EtokOkon

The AkwaIbom State Chapter Chairman of the Alumni of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron (AMANO), Engr. Samuel Ekwere, has blamed insufficient well trained and competent sailors in Nigeria on what he called “lack of locally owned deep sea sailing vessels,” and called on the federal government and NIMASA to develop fiscal policies that would encourage private ownership of sailing vessels by Nigerians, to facilitate training of cadets in the global marine economy.
The chapter chairman, Engr. Samuel Ekwere in his words, said: “The cadets need proper sailing experience, not on ships where charts are almost never corrected or courses remain the same for months or even years”. He further argued that, there is no encouragement for private individuals to own vessels-cargo, container, bulk carrier or tankers in this country, so the first step is for the government to review our fiscal policies as they relate to vessels ownership. There is a provision in the law which allows Nigerian owned and registered vessels to carry fifty percent (50%) of all Nigerian cargoes”.
The alumni chairman, however, commended the Rector of the academy, Comr. Emmanuel Effedua
for giving the institution face-lifts through the renovation of dilapidated facilities and construction of new ones in the academy. He stressed that the development strides of the new Rector, Effedua, have given the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN) Oron, the prospect of producing world-class maritime professionals in the country.
He commended the Rector, also, for ensuring Improvement of welfare of cadets and the staff of MAN, Oron, saying that the development would encourage robust synergies between staff and cadets of the institution and the leadership of the academy to realize the vision of the maritime academy.
He pledged the support of the alumni to the Rector, and urged the management of the academy to always carry the alumni along in every development process in the institution. He also, called on the host communities and the state government to ensure security and to cooperate with the academy to boost marine industry in the State.
