FRSC Officials Cause More Accidents On Road - Lawmaker Alleges

By Henry Nkom

The Member representing Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara State Constituency in  the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Mr. Idongesit Ntekpere has berated officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission, (FRSC) over what he described as their penchant to cause hazards to road users and pedestrians.
He stated this at the 2019 Handover/Award/Funding of American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) Nigerian Chapter held in Uyo.
Ntekpere said he was using the occasion to pose a query on the activities of Road Safety Commanders and their other Rank who have made it a point of duty to make roads unsafe for Nigerians adding that “It is unbelievable at times to see Road Safety Officers setting up their check point either at a spot where the road is bad or where a truck had fallen earlier”.
Ntekpere said such an attitude and activity could only create the possibility for more mishaps on the roads.

More worrisome according to the Lawmaker where is a situation where an accident occurs and instead of the FRSC Officers to clear the environment and help victims to the hospital, they only set up their checkpoint to check particulars or convict people in mobile courts, paying attention to the injured
He said the high command of the FRSC should take drastic steps to put a stop to the ugly activities of its men and officers.
Reacting sharply to the accusations, the FRSC Akwa Ibom State Head of operations who was attending the event, Mr. D. A Irunoyi said men and Officers of the Corps are well trained and he could not possibly agree that officer will behave in the way and manner disclosed by Ntekpere.

“We in the FRSC are trained to save lives and with such detailed training, I don’t think any of our officers could see accident and would not take steps to help the injured and save their lives. Moreover, the sanction for any misbehavior in the commission is severe and an officer would not want to lose his or her job for being insensitive”
Irunoyi however said if members of the public find any of its officers misbehaving in a disorderly manner should contact the sector commander or himself.
He gave out the phone numbers that should be called in case of any infraction.
