Onofiok, The Boy Akpabio Raised To Man
By UbongAbasi Ise
At Odoro Ikpe in Ini local
government area, precisely on Saturday 26th January, 2019, Senator
Godswill Akpabio was quoting the Book of Proverbs chapter 17 verse 13 which
says, “Whoever rewards evil for good, evil will not depart from his house.” He
was stressing how he turned over 500 boys into men in Akwa Ibom, some of whom
are turning back to fight him.
But there is
more to Akpabio’s regrets. It is high time we pause our varied-ranging
political interests and sentiments just for a moment, and then take a second
look on the candidates filing out before us as the elections approach round the
corner. Given in to superficial affability
and populist impression of these political wheeler-dealers could prove cataclysmic
to the polity, especially, at a time like this when we seek to undo the years
the cankerworm had ravaged. Let us first look out for those with palpable trait
of betrayal of trust and ingratitude because a politician who bites the finger
of his benefactor can chew ferociously the fingers of those that voted him into
office. The first suspect is one Onofiok Luke who is leading the Akwa Ibom
State House of Assembly in an infantile manner. Today, Onofiok is taking
another role of leading the pack of political brigands that go amok unleashing
vituperative insults against Senator Godswill Akpabio, the very man who breathe
political life into them. If Onofiok, particularly, could forget how Senator
Godswill Akpabio gave him back his educational life after his controversial
rustication from the University of Uyo and how Akpabio made him a personal
assistant on political matters from whence he enjoyed meteoric rise to power,
definitely, he wouldn’t have forgotten how Godswill Akpabio visited his mother,
and upon discovering that the woman was living in a one-room apartment in a Face-Me-I-Face-You neighbourhood, ordered
a fresh construction of a befitting house for Onofiok’s mother; and the building
was completed in few months time. If this boy could easily forget Akpabio’s
benevolence, there is no doubt Onofiok Luke would forget those risking their
lives today to support his political expedition. So bad that he is mobilizing
these unsuspecting political followers just to feather his own nest.
Onofiok Luke is accusing Senator Akpabio today of
dishing out Mbiam (fetish oath) to supporters in order to enforce commitment.
He even threatened to expose more facts, a position I am humbly challenging him
to go ahead, otherwise I see it as a mere political tactics of brinkmanship. Perhaps
Luke was spewing this trash because he might have received some wild
inspiration from codeine and tramadol, 255 milligram. It is well known that the
speaker is covering up his own side of the story. To those who never know,
Onofiok is the reigning mbiam champion and mbiam chief priest in Akwa Ibom
State today. This conclusion is drawn from the premise of Mr. Michael Matthew Ekpo’s
revelation. Few months ago, Onofiok Luke, as alleged, was coaxing Mr. Ekpo, a
media practitioner, to swear to mbiam oath just to get him committed to his
starry-eyed political quest. But the gentleman squeamishly turned him down
because he can’t belong to the world of a puerile, careless speaking speaker.
Therefore, Onofiok Luke has no moral fibre to point to a speck in the eye of
Senator Akpabio while there is a massive plank in own his eye.
Onofiok is just a solecism of distrust, betrayal of
confidence, and a personification of ingratitude, full stop. The good side the
people feel they see about him is just a mirage and sham. It is just too risky
to put trust on such erratic and a knave personality. There is this popular
Latin proverb that says, Danaos timeo, et
dona ferentes, meaning, I fear the Greeks, even when they are bringing
gifts. Anyone associating with Onofiok should not be tempted to close eyes for sleep,
even if when he is bringing gifts, if you know, you know.
But who was Onofiok Luke before Godswill Akpabio’s
coming to power? He was just a young man who was roaming the streets to ‘play
band’ after his rustication in the University. His story changed when he was
picked up by Akpabio, dusted and placed in the corridors of power. So sad that today,
he is urinating on the head of the very man who set him on his feet.
Had Godswill Akpabio known, he wouldn’t have
unblocked him by letting him go ahead with his State House of Assembly ambition
back then. Because of his infraction against his mentor, he was made by the PDP
to write an apology letter, and he was impelled to beg Akpabio on his knees.
Out of magnanimity, the former governor forgave and allowed him. Today, Onofiok
is the speaker of the Akwa Ibom 6th State House of Assembly and the
PDP flag-bearer in the Etinan Federal Constituency election. Sadly enough, he
is gallivanting all over the place, traducing the source of his political
career. He makes it looks like Akpabio is dragging the same constituency seat
with him – Let Onofiok know that a river that forgets its source would soon dry
out; this is an ancient wisdom.
One of the worst things that ever happen to Akwa Ibom
State is that, with the trifling speakership of Onofiok at the State House of
Assembly, the 6th assembly is losing its creative edge. His headship
is just an utter embarrassment to the rest of the honourable members. He has
encommoned our state legislature and reduced it to a miserable appendage of the
Udom Emmanuel’s cabinet, the reason the state government is generally
performing woefully, because there is no check and balance in the system. With
Onofiok at the helm of the legislative affairs, there is rife tension amongst
the members. There is no peace in the house; even the wives of the lawmakers
are competing heavyweight title belt as they are purportedly fighting
themselves from Akwa Ibom to Jerusalem and back, just because of one man. May
the forthcoming polls change the unsavoury narratives of our dear Akwa Ibom
State politics, I pray.
