Masquerades On Rampage As Vehicle Kill Colleague

By Abasiofiok Inyang

The annual “ekpo” masquerade festival by the people of Nung Oku Ubo I, Oruk Anam Local Government Area, on Friday, December 7, 2018, ended in crisis following the killing of one of their members who was yet to be identified as at the time of filing this report, by a hit and run vehicle.

The Sensor Crime Desk gathered that the “ekpo” masquerade comprised mostly of youths were moving from their village to other neigbouring communities and were blocking the main road before the vehicle round into their midst and one of them died in the process.

It was further gathered from an eye witness account that while some of the youths carrying masquerades opened their mask and wept seriously for their death colleague, others embarked on destruction spree, damaging any vehicle that came their way.

It however, took timely intervention of men of the Nigeria Police Force from Abak Division and Ikot Ubo Station to save the situation from degenerating into full crisis.
Speaking with our Crime Desk, one of the witnesses, blamed the accident on the manner that those carrying the masquerades behaved and extorting money from road users, saying that if “not for the fact that they spread and took over the road, the driver would not have ramned into them in a bit to escape extortion.
Following the accident, the masquerades and miscreants poured their anger and destroyed vehicles that came their way until the Police intervene.
Speaking with our correspondent authorized, confirmed the killing and described it as an unfortunate. He, however, warned youths taking laws into their hands saying that Police will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute any person that cause trouble.
He also sued for calm, assuring that full investigation will be carried out in order to arrest and prosecute the fleeing driver.
Meanwhile, youths have again been caution not to use the festive period to cause trouble, but rather reflect on the love that God has for mankind and sent His son to come to the world.
Bishop Aniekan Usoro of the United Pentecostal Assembly, Obio Ndot, Oruk Anam Local Government Area, gave the caution recently while speaking with our correspondent on the essence of Christmas.
He said that the period should be a period for show of love and not a period for only celebration of what one does not know anything about or a period to make trouble in the name of celebrating cultural festival.
“This is a period we should reflect on God's love to mankind and not a period for unnecessary celebration without reflecting on the essence of it”, the man of God said.
