Ohaneze President Accused Of Igbo Crisis In A’Ibom
By UbongAbasi Ise
As the leadership crisis
continues to rock Igbo community in Akwa Ibom State, a prominent Igbo chief has
blamed the turmoil on Barr. Osuagwu, the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo in
the state.
Speaking in Uyo recently, Mr.
Sunday Orie, one of the members of the council of chiefs in the Igbo Community,
revealed to newsmen that the struggle of who to become an Eze Ndigbo in the
state is amplified by the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo who has chosen to
keep mute about the situation while siding one of the disputing parties.
Orie said that Osuagwu,
instead of looking for a way to quell the crisis, is becoming biased and opted to
support C.Y.C. Umeakuku, a self-imposed eze gburuburu against Eze Barth Okpala,
who is a bonafide Eze Ndigbo in Akwa Ibom State.
Explaining why the President
General chooses to give backing to C.Y.C. Umeakuku, the chieftain said it is
because he was registered by Umeakuku.
Sunday Orie lamented how Barr.
Osuagwu is using his influence as a legal practitioner to support C.Y.C Umeakuku
in fighting a course that is not his, saying they are on the verge of tearing
apart and leading to doom the peace-loving Igbo Community which their
forefathers built and they came to inherit.
He maintained that there is
nothing like Eze of Ezes apart from the Chairman of the Ezes which C.Y.C.
Umeakuku claims to be.
“There is nowhere in the
existence of the Igbo that there is an Eze of the Ezes. We only have Ezes and a
chairman who would come out from the Ezes after election. The position lasts for two to three years and
another chairman would emerge,” said Orie.
He admonished the President
General for joining force with one of the contesting parties to deepen the crisis.
“The President of the Ohaneze
Ndigbo supposed to call them to order because he has the power over them and
can dissolve their offices if they refuses to adhere to his instructions rather
than joining party with C.Y.C. (Umeakuku ) to bring disunity among us. Barr.
Osuagwu knows his position and should use it well.
“We cannot continue with this
fight because other communities and the host State will see us as causing
trouble,” stressed Orie.
He further called on the
youths to be on the right track and not to follow the elders in fighting a
course that will not lead them anywhere adding that “there is no need of
registering any organisation outside the Igbo Community founded by our
forefathers and if there should be anything the youths want to do, they should
act in line with the community and not association.”
