HEIGHTENED INSECURITY IN A'IBOM: Gumen Kill 3, Behead JTF Informant
The activities of gunmen who disguise as militants to wreck
havoc in parts of the State especially Etim Ekpo and Ukanafun Local Government
Areas have taken a more dangerous dimension following the three civilians
including a woman in Udiana Enem, Ikot Obioma and Uruk Ata II, all in Etim Ekpo
LGA.
The killing, our crime desk gathered, happened shortly after
the beheading of a joint task force, JTF informant by militants in the same
Etim Ekpo LGA.
It was further gathered that the informant whose name could
not be ascertained as at the time of filing this report was beheaded during
exchange of gunfire between the JTF and the militants when the security
operatives raided the militants' hideouts in Obon Obot village.
A source told our correspondent that the JTF had stormed the
community to arrest a wanted cultist and militant leaders, who reportedly led
the Ikot Ekpene prison jail break on December 27, 2017 during which no fewer
than 40 inmates escaped and are yet to be re-arrested.
A resident of the area told our Crime Desk that the
militants ambushed, captured and beheaded the informant.
According to him, “They ambushed the informant who was
dressed in military camouflage and captured him. They chopped off his head and
dumped his remains at Urua Obo Inyang Market.”
Confirming the killing, JTF team commander in-charge of Etim
Ekpo, Ukanafun, Oruk Anam, Ika and Ikot Abasi, Majo Mohammed Hussain, who led
the operation, confirmed the incident.
He said, “The dead person was our informant and we gave him
military camouflage to wear so that he could lead us to the camp. They were
three and we gave them military uniforms to lead us to the location of the
militant's camp to capture some of the suspects who escaped from the Ikot
Ekpene Prisons. But when he heard gunshots, out of fear, he attempted to escape
and I think bullets hit him.”
Meanwhile, a terrorist gang said to be loyal to a deceased
gang leader, Akaninyene Jumbo also known as Iso Akpafid, who was killed on
January 15, 2018 by the military, has kidnapped a school teacher at St. Joseph
Primary School, Iwuken, Mr. Ekikere Ukpekpe.
The teacher, who hails from Ikot Obioma village, was said to
have been abducted by the Red Boys Cult; on his farm after returning from his
base in Ukanafun.
A source said that Ukpekpe's abductors demanded N1 million
from his family. The source said that the family has no such amount of money as
husband and wife are primary school teachers and pleaded for quick intervention
by security operatives to ensure his release.
