N25,000 Acceptance Fee: Crisis Looms At Uniuyo
Crisis is said to be in the offing following plans by the
management of the University of Uyo, Uniuyo, to impose N25,000 acceptance fee
for students admitted for 2017/2018 academic session.
The acceptance fee which came through a circular issued by
the school's management and made available to The Sensor has already generated
tension in the school community and among parents and affected students.
The release read in parts,
This is to inform all the candidates offered provisional
admission into the university of Uyo (UNIUYO) Degree Programmes for 2017/2018
academic session, that the management has released the amount to be paid as
acceptance fee and the payment procedure.
“Successfully admitted candidates are to pay a
non-refundable acceptance fee of 25,000 only.”
It was gathered that aside the acceptance fee, there are
other sundry charges made before the prospective students could be fully
admitted. This, it was learnt will force the students to cough out about
N30,000 to be admitted into the school.
The development, it was learnt has caused ripples between
management and parents. The parents are said to be questioning the rationale
behind the exorbitant acceptance fee in a Federal Institution in the country.
One of the parents who have his name as Anietie Ibanga
described the N25,000 acceptance fee in a Federal Institution in a country that
Muhammadu Buhari is the President, as fraud.
He said, “when parents are battling with the harsh economic
situation in the country, the imposition of 25,000 acceptance fee by a Federal
University in which Muhammadu Buhari is the President is nothing but fraud.
The visibly angry parent said that the management of the
institution has not interest of the poor students at heart. He advised the
school management to rescind the decision in the interest of the less
privileged students who cannot afford the high cost of fees in private schools
but have to depend on public schools to actualize their dream of becoming
graduates.
Another parent who did not want his name in the print said
that the management, parents and the affected students may be on a collision
cause if the situation is not well managed. He advised the management of the
institution to have a second thought about the fee considering the present
economic situation in the country.
When contacted, the Director of Information at the
University, Mr. Godfrey Essien, confirmed the N25,000 acceptance fee.
