State Bamboo Committee Inaugurated

An international organization has
inaugurated Akwa Ibom State Committee on Bamboo after the state indicated
interest to go into full scale bamboo cultivation.
The President of World Bamboo
Organization, Mr. Michel Abadie, inaugurated a nine-man committee on bamboo
weekend after he led a statewide tour to inspect the species of bamboo
available in the state.
The Commissioner for Agriculture
and Food Sufficiency, Dr. Uduak Charles Udo-Inyang, was appointed the Chairman
of the committee.
Other members include Mr. Michel
Abadie (President of World Bamboo Organization); Dr. Iniobong Essien
(Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resource); the Commissioner for
Investment, Commerce and Industry probably represented by the ministry’s
Permanent Secretary, Mr. Oliver Udoukpo; Elder Wilson Ekpo (Permanent
Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sufficiency); Engr. Zubeyir Gulabi (Managing Director of Seven Star
Bamboo Fibre Manufacturing Company); Mr. Ukeme Nyah (Representative of the
bamboo innovative Science); Dr. Mercy Akpan (Head of Department, Forestry and
Wildlife, University of Uyo); and Engr. Richard Ekpe (Director of Agriculture,
Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sufficiency) who is serving as the committee’s
secretary.
Mr. Michel Abadie promised that
the work-plan that would help kick-start the pilot project on bamboo in the
state would be made available in two weeks time.
The World Bamboo Organization
President said that bamboo development in the state can create about 20,000
direct jobs in the state.
He called on the establishment of
a bamboo village as this would go a long way in helping to demonstrate the uses
of bamboo.
The Frenchman said education for
the bamboo farmers is very essential, and people need more information on what
to do with the bamboo.
