Settle Down And Serve A'Ibom People - Saviour Akpan Tell New LG Leadership

A human rights activist and Executive Director, COMPPART for Justice and Peace Building, Mr. Saviour Akpan has called on the new leadership in the local government area in the State to settle down and serve the people, noting that their three year tenure has begun and has started counting.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Sensor, Akpan said that the new leadership-executive and legislative would not have any reason to fail in delivering democracy dividend they promised the people.
He said that rather than engage in bickering that usually characterized the third tier of government in the State, the new leadership should embark on things that would benefit the people positively.
He regretted that the last executive local government administration in the State did not make any single by-law but wasted public funds. This, he attributed to lack of knowledge by the legislature on how to make bylaws.
He, therefore, called on the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to release funds for training of councilors on effective bylaw making.
On recent bogus promises made by some council chairman in the State, the rights activist, advised such chairmen to stop making promises that are outside the functions of local government. He advised them to study the provisions of 1999 Constitution (as amended) and get acquainted with Fourth Schedule while deals specifically with the functions of a local government council.
“The fourth schedule of the 1999 Constitution has made provision for the functions of a local government council. The council chairman should study the provision and other laws guiding the running of local government very well to guide them. They should therefore stop making bogus promises to the people knowing fully well that they would be able to deliver,” the rights activist said.
