A'Ibom LG Poll: APC Insists On Declaring Results At Wards... Raises Alarm On Planned Malpractice By PDP, AKISIEC

The Akwa Ibom State Chapter of All Progressives Party, APC, has drawn public attention to malpractices orchestrated by the state’s Peoples Democratic Party in conjunction with the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission, AKISIEC, to scuttle their winning chances at the forthcoming local government poll while vowing to resist any attempt aimed at manipulating the results of the elections.
Interacting with newsmen in Uyo yesterday in company of top party’s chieftains, Senator Aloysius Etok, the Chairman of APC Local Government Campaign Committee, said that PDP in collusion with AKISIEC, is making clandestine moves to gain undue advantage in the December 2nd local government poll.
“The All Progressives Congress (APC) Akwa Ibom chapter is getting increasingly perturbed and concerned following verifiable information of clandestine moves by the PDP in collusion with the state Independent Electoral, Commission (AKISIEC) to gain undue advantage in the December 2nd local government election.
“Right from the issuance of Notice for Local Government Election by AKISIEC, we observed a clear pattern of absurdity and breach of rules of practice and procedure for the call-up to the election for which we approached the Court for relevant interpretation. As expected, we are pursuing the matter and other issues of concern via the appropriate judicial channels to ensure that APC and her candidates stand on a firm and proper footing with other candidates for the election.
“Consequent upon further concern, APC issued a Press Release on 8th November 2017 titled "Illegal/Secret Recruitment and Training of Ad-hoc Staff for the December 2nd, 2017 Local Government Election by AKISIEC" wherein we queried and cautioned the recruitment exercise by AKISIEC which ought to be open and transparent but was fraught with irregularities and embellished in secrecy,” the Senator told newsmen.
Etok decried what he described as a calculated attempt made by AKISIEC to deny APC faithful in the state copies of Manual for Election Officials while notifying that the essential provisions of the Manual dealing with announcement of elections results have been altered by the state’s electoral body.
“Of late, APC has noticed with dismay an amended edition of the publication "AKISIEC Manual for Election Officials (2017)", copies of which are restricted from circulation to the Party. Informed sources say the essential provisions of the Manual dealing with announcement of election results has been drastically altered and clearly negates the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010 as Amended.
The Chairman of APC Local Government Campaign Committee further condemned in strong terms the decision to announce the outcome of the local elections in Uyo instead of the ward and local government levels saying that the act is unacceptable to APC.
“The announcement of the results should be at ward centre, and the winner declared. When we get to the local government level, the result brought in from ward centres should be collated, and winners declared at the local government level.
“After the collation, you want to enter your car and take the result to Uyo for announcement and the candidate declared winner in Uyo? To this, APC says no. We reject it. We want all results and the Chairmanship winners to be declared at the local government level while such records be brought to AKISIEC headquarters for record purposes,” Etok reacted.
The Senator, who formerly represented Akwa Ibom Northeast at the upper chamber of the national assembly. said APC candidates are aware of threats and intimidation by the ruling party in the state including plans to announce the results in the Government House, Uyo.
“APC candidates in the Local Government Election are aware of threats and intimidation by their PDP opponents who boastfully assert that the election results will be written and announced from "Government House". This is not a mere boast and assertion. APC takes the assertion very seriously as it is the accustomed practice of the PDP to announce Local Government Election results from Government House contrary to the rules and procedure guiding announcement of election results.
“We wish to alert the electorate, International Election Monitoring Groups, Civil Liberty Organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the respective security agencies of the conspiracy and grand design by AKISIEC in collusion with the PDP to perfect the plot to rig the election in favour of the PDP thereby fraudulently derail the course of a peaceful Local Government Election in the state,” he said.
The APC chieftain declared that the party shall resist an attempt to manipulate the election, and will reject the results of an election not founded on the rule of law.
