supervising the level of progress made so far in the training of one hundred
software designers undertaken by the State Government in partnership with

accomplished.
The three month programme which started
on September 1st and will elapse on November 16, the commissioner noted
is the beginning of the plan by the Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration to
equip youths of the State with skills that will make them big time players in
the digital world.
“As a ministry we are determined to
produce as many web-developers as possible to help stimulate the economy of the
State and create jobs.
Web developers are specialized personnel
capable of designing and developing data, create programs and websites as well
as producing reliable and high performing applications and services which can
be accessed over the internet” the commissioner maintained.

The commissioner who urged more Akwa
Ibom persons to be interested in the digital world said “In today’s digital
world, it is obvious that acquiring digital skills and gaining new
qualifications is the key to success.
Whether you are a young upstart, looking
forward to climbing the career ladder or a Senior Executive in-charge of a
large team, failure to keep pace with the digital revolution could prove
disastrous” he said. Dr. Essien added that the solution for unemployment in
Nigeria is for job seekers to go digital by acquiring pre-requisite skills.
“You cannot be analog, yet you expect a
job in a digital world. That is not possible. There is a huge digital skill gap
in Nigeria waiting to be closed. Accordingly, ICT is influencing employment
both as an industry that create jobs and as a tool that empowers workers to
access new forms of works in new and more flexible ways the commissioner
stated.
Speaking further on the contributions of
ICT to the economy and why people should take it seriously, he said “in
Nigeria, it is on record that the ICT Sector alone contributed N500 billion
into the nation’s economy in 2014 and created about 2.5 million jobs in 10
years.
The statistics also shows that the
sector attracted about $30billion of foreign direct investment from 2003 to
2014”.

firm which is training the web developer in Akwa Ibom state, hotels.ng, Mr.

selected.
According to him, the trainees are getting
the best training in software development which makes it possible for them to
successfully compete with their contemporaries across the world.
