The village head of Ikot Akpan
Okop in Ekpat Enin local government area, where St. Gabriel Coconut Oil Factory
project is sited, has been suspended indefinitely by Akwa Ibom State government
on grounds of insubordination and other acts of misconduct, The Sensor gathered.
The village head of the
community, Eteidung Obot Akpan Thompson, was served a letter of suspension from
office with reference number MLG/CHF/18/S.8/327, dated 24th October
2017 from Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy
Affairs, Mr. Udo Ekpenyong, which cited insub`ordination and misconducts such
as embezzlement, misappropriation of funds, fraud, false claims, corruption and
lack of respect for constituted authority as being the reasons for suspension.
The letter to Obot Thompson
reads: “You were on the 19th day of October, 2017 issued with a
query bordering on your acts of insubordination and other acts of misconduct,
including embezzlement and appropriation of funds, fraud, false claims and
corruption.
“You have up till now
blatantly refused to reply to the query. Your action shows that you have no
respect for Constituted Authority and that you are not a person of good
character as envisaged by Section 13(b) of the Akwa Ibom State Traditional
Rulers Law, Cap 134, Laws of Akwa Ibom State, 2000.
“Arising from the above, you
are hereby suspended forthwith as the Village Head of Ikot Akpan Okop, Ukpum
Minya Clan, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.”
The letter further directed
the embattled monarch to hand over the property of the village in his
possession to the principal officer in charge of the village council.
But the report reaching the The Sensor as at the time of filing this report has it that Eteidung Obot Akpan
Thompson has not complied with the directive given him to surrender the village
properties to the council.
The new executive council of Ikot
Akpan Okop village constituted on Friday November 10, 2017, has also written to
the estranged village head asking him to handover to the chairman the village property.
In a letter dated 13th
November 2017, the council gave Eteidung Obot Thompson 24 hours to comply.
“Sequel to your suspension
from office by the State government on 24th October 2017, you were
directed to handover all the village property to the Chairman of the Council.
“You are advised to officially
handover the village property to the Chairman of the Council within 24 hours of
the receipt of this letter.”
According to the information
made available to The Sensor, the
swearing-in ceremony for the new executive council members was conducted by the
Clan Head of Ukpum Minya, His Royal Highness, Etebom Archibong James Umana at
his palace, and Elder Godfrey Tom Etukudoh was sworn in as Chairman of the village
council. Others sworn in include Mr.
Wilson Smith Joshua (Secretary); Chief Patrick Umoetuk Joshua (Community
Leader); Comrade Udeme Edem (Task Force Chairman); Mr. Japhet Obot (Treasurer);
and Mr. Friday Sam (Member). Our correspondent gathered that four family heads were
sworn in that same day including Chief Sunday Ufot; Chief Samuel Okoko; Chief
Sunday Udoh and Chief Lucky Jumbo.
In his acceptance speech as
the community leader of Ikot Akpan Okop, Chief Patrick Umoetuk Joshua called on
the suspended village head to sheath his sword and support the newly
constituted village council while appealing to him to also hand over all the
village properties to the council. He commended the Commissioner for Local
Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Udo Ekpenyong, and the Commissioner for
Agriculture and Food Sufficiency, Dr. Uduak Charles Udo-Inyang for working to
ensure that peace prevails in the community.
