Killings, Violence: Police Draft Special Squad To Ukanafun, Etim Ekpo

In a bid to bring to an end, the
incessant killing, kidnapping and other violent crime perpetrated by dare-devil
criminals which has posed serious security threat to the people of Ukanafun and
Etim Ekpo local government areas, more than 69 combat ready policemen and other
security operatives have been drafted to various flash-point in the area to
smoke out the criminals.
The exercise code named, “Operation
Purge,” The Sensor Crime Desk learnt,
is to ensure that the two local government areas is rid of the ravaging criminals
who have made life difficult for the people.
Inaugurating the operation, the State
Commissioner for Police, Mr. Zubairu Muazu represented by Deputy Commissioner
of Police in-charge of Operations, Abdulmumin Dimba, warned the criminals to
repent or leave the area in particular and the State in general.
He said that there will be no hiding
place for anyone still engaging in crime.
Muazu, however, charged the team to be
civil with the civilian populace in the course of carrying out the operation. He
also called on members of the two local government areas to coporate with the
team by giving useful information that will aid in purging the criminals.
In his remarks, the Ukanafun Transition
Committee Chairman, Barr. Israel Ideh thanked the State Police command for the
bold steps taken to combat crime in the area. He assured the cooperation of his
administration and that of his Etim Ekpo colleague towards flushing out the
criminals.
A traditional ruler who spoke with The Sensor Crime Desk said that the
launching of Operation Purge will fast-track return of peace in the two local
government areas. He also assured the cooperation of the traditional rulers
with the team.
It would be recalled that no fewer than
50 persons have been killed and many others kidnapped in both Ukanafun and Etim
Ekpo since the beginning of this year. The criminal act is said to be led by
one Akaninyene Jumbo popularly known as Iso Akpafid.
The inauguration event was witnessed by
Ikot Ekpene Area Commander, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Chukwu
Ikechukwu, Political office holders, traditional rulers, women and youth
groups, among others.
