Health Donors Withdraw From A’Ibom …HIV/AIDS, Neglected Tropical Diseases Treatment Suffer Set-back
There is palpable fear in the Akwa Ibom
Health Community as more donor agencies in life threating diseases are pulling
out of the State.
The
Sensor reliably
gathered that international agencies which support the creation of awareness
and treatment of HIV/AIDS are pulling out and as a result funds for the
creation of awareness and other activities are becoming scarce.
An Executive Direxctor of a
Non-Government Organization (NGO) in Uyo told The Sensor that the withdrawal of donor agencies in the fight
against HIV/AIDS is very dangerous to the population and government must act fast
tot save the situation.
“If we will succeed in checking new
infection then we must have funds to create awareness to the local level but
now that donor agencies are learning, how can we do this? This is trouble “he
said.
On Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTSs) which
include river blindness, elephantiases, schistosomiasis, hookworm, roundwarm, whipworm,
onchorcerciasis, leprosy among others,
The
Sensor can
report authoritatively that the main donor agency, Helen Keller international
is in its last year of providing funds for treatment of these diseases which
are in all local government areas of the State.
As soon as Helen Keller pulls out, then
those suffering from the disease will no longer have access to information and
drugs The Sensor learnt.
A member of an NGO who spoke with the
sensor, Victor Osatogbe pleaded with the State government to move in fast and
set aside funds for these health problems in order to save the lives of
citizens.
Culled from The Sensor
