Saturday’s environmental sanitation exercise took an unexpected twist at Itam Sports Centre in Itu local government area as scuffle ensued between Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Dr. Iniobong Essien and Mr. Idongesit Ituen, member representing Itu State Constituency in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.
The Sensor gathered that Dr. Iniobong Essien who was monitoring the cleanup exercise at Itam market was hinted that some persons were flouting the state government orders by playing football during sanitation hours. On arriving the venue, the commissioner, to his dismay, met Mr. Ituen playing football with the youths of the area, and open confrontation between these government officials set in.
According to an eyewitness who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, the house member had earlier participated in the exercise before joining the youths to play soccer.
“The Member Representing Itu state, Hon. Ituen being a sport loving young man and a promoter, personally drove himself from his house carrying a grass cutting machine behind his vehicle to the sport center. On arrival with his aids, he gathered some boys who were at the center to sweep, handpicked water sachets and using the cutting machine to clear the outgrown grass himself before handing the machine over to the youths who were very happy and eager to join in the excise.
Another source who, himself was part of the football practice, narrated to The Sensor the reaction of Dr. Essien when he got to the sports centre.
“When the Hon. Commissioner came with his team, he noticed that the Hon. Member was there.   As a government official seeing his fellow government man, he would have inquired of the House Member to know why he was there. Instead, he ordered the boys he came with and the police to start beating and to send the boys who assisted the Hon. Member to clean the place away.
The altercation ensued when the Environment Commissioner later move to confront the House Member, the source continued.
“The Commissioner then sent for the House Member, but the latter, who appeared visibly angry queried, "is it now you people see me? I am not ready to talk to anybody. I came to do sanitation with my people. Ask the Director for Sport, he saw the cutting machine.”
