The Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Sufficiency, Dr. Uduak Charles Udo-Inyang, while meeting with the Akwa Ibom State Fishery Stakeholders at AKADEP Office in Uyo recently disclosed that with availability of data room, farmers could easily access funds at any financial institution.
Udo-Inyang said that the cost of generating data room for the farmers and fishermen in the state is about N150,000.  He promised that the government would pay for the exercise while tasking actors in the state’s agro-sector to embrace the initiative in order put a stop to the attendant complaint over inability to access credit facility.
The Commissioner further said that the importance of organizing the meeting with the stakeholders in fishery industry was to move the sector to the greater level.

In artisanal fishery, stakeholders in the meetings identified oil spills, militancy, piracy, multiple taxations, lack of funds to purchase fishing equipments, lack of modern skills and technology as the factors constituting fundamental impediment to the growth of fishery industry in the state.
In the area of aquaculture, fish-farmers decried the high cost of feed and called on the state government to establish feed mill in the state as this would help bring down the cost of buying feed for the fish.
Meanwhile, Obong Uduak Ekeme, the secretary of Akwa Ibom State Chapter of Catfish and Allied Fishery Association of Nigeria, CAFAN, warned that there may be marked decline in the number of catfish in the State by next year as the Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, has declared intention to buy off all the catfish available in Akwa Ibom.
