Top Nollywood comic actor, Ime Bishop, popularly known as Okon Lagos, says the only thing he could celebrate during Nigeria’s 61st independence anniversary is the resilience of Nigerians in the face of economic hardship and insecurity.

Speaking with The Sensor in the eve of Independence Day celebration, Bishop said his regrets on the state of the nation is a reflection of the general mood of Nigerians as the citizens could no longer identify with the country with a sense of pride.

“There is nothing good about this country right now which we should be proud of. I am not proud. Nigeria is a great country but the leadership has made this country one that we are not proud of as citizens both at home and in the Diaspora.

The only thing I can celebrate Nigeria for is the resilience and the toughness of our people to survive terrible conditions. We are strong, we are very resilient, and we have tough skin.  If we were to have short span of tolerance by now the country would have been broken into tiny pieces and we would not even have a country to call our own. So I admire the sense of resilience of the Nigerian people,” he said.

Ime Bishop further decried how a dollar is now sold at N575, saying it makes international trade very expensive for Nigerians who involve in it.

He also lamented how innocent citizens are no longer safe in the country as a common activity of having to return home from a normal routine has become a feat worth celebrating owing to insecurity.

On how to redeem the battered image of the country, the actor tipped entertainment industry as a huge positive exporter of the country’s image to the world saying the leadership should prioritize the industry and make sure it is viable and sustaining enough.
